There are those people who would affirm; to question ones faith merely reflects a lack of faith. Then there are others who would contend; only a fool blindly accepts that which is unquestionable. One aspect of religion is based on faith – blind faith. Those who have been in religious circles and have questioned biblical truths or church doctrine know the wrath of such an atrocity. When church leaders do not know an answer, or they do not wish you to know an answer, it becomes a mortal sin to question.
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Chair of the Religious Studies and archeologist, James Tabor (pictured above), claims to have made yet another startling discovery, which will shake the very foundation of Christianity. Dr. Tabor, a PhD in New Testament and Early Christian Literature, while on location in Jerusalem, claims he and his team of archeologist have discovered an interesting tomb.
You may recall Dr. Tabor. In 2006 Dr. Tabor’s controversial documentary, The Lost Tomb of Jesus, directed by James Cameron who directed such blockbuster films as the Terminator, Titanic, Rambo, and Avatar. The documentary details the finding of the Talpiot Tomb, which Dr. Tabor believed to be the burial tomb of Jesus and his family, including descendants of Jesus – Jesus’ son. The speculation of Jesus remains, being located and Jesus bearing children did not meet the Christian community with open arms and joyful noise. The very thought of the Messiah’s remains located would give way to an inquest of religious beliefs held over several hundred years and lead to the questioning of Jesus raising from the grave, and His “purity” or divinity would be negated had He bore children. Needless to say, Dr. Tabor’s findings are not accepted as irrefutable proof, nor are they legitimized by his peers. Dr. Tabor is labeled as nothing more than an outcast in the religious community – a Heavenly Kook!
In his most recent discovery, Dr. Tabor alleges he and his team, by way of remote camera and robotic-arm, have located a tomb, which has encased in it seven ossuaries, or bone boxes holding the remains of deceased, which have engravings on them. One of the engravings is of “Jonah and the Whale”, the other of a Greek inscription calling out to “God to raise up someone” (full story – http://www.heraldextra.com Finding a new image: Professor’s discovery resurrects debate over ‘Jesus tomb’).
Although Dr. Tabor claims the newest find substantiates the oldest recorded evidence of the Resurrection, naysayers say it is merely an inscription like the many found on ossuaries and walls throughout tombs in the holy land. Whether or not Dr. Tabor’s finding prove anything related to the validity of Christianity or to the existence or nature of the Messiah is left to be seen.
The big question: what do the findings say about Dr. Tabor’s credibility as a PhD in Religious studies – an expert in the field of faith? Is religion and faith to be accepted, unchallenged, and not to be impoverished through invalidation or affirmation?
Speaking from experience, I once challenged the Pastor in the church I attended. I also challenged the Sunday School Instructors and the Deacons. I had questions, which were burning holes through my skull. I wanted answers. I could not find the answers so I attended a prestigious Bible College. I was intrigued. Searching for the truth, I spent countless hours, days, and sleepless nights studying months on end.
Any scientist will tell you, to accurately prove a thesis you must disprove the thesis – the truth will prevail. Not to question is to not consider all the possibilities, which is thoughtless and foolish. The more you wish to believe in a thing, the more you should trust in its truths. Thus, “blind faith”, which is confused with ignorance, is both blind, and it reflects a lack of faith.
If in the course of his studies, Dr. Tabor has revealed “truths” he is the better man for it, despite the optimists and the prophets of doom. However, if in the opening of the ossuaries and the deciphering of the biblical hieroglyphics and the ancient script the scribes have left scrawled on the tomb walls reveal the family of Jesus, including his offspring, and the messages from beyond are no more than a repeat of the infamous Geraldo Rivera’s broadcast of the opening of the tomb believed to be occupied by notorious gangster Alfonse “Al” Capone, which held nothing more than stale air, Dr. Tabor would become nothing more than what his recent colleges and adversaries have labeled him – a kook.
For the sake of argument, let’s assume Dr. Tabor is not a kook. Jesus was buried in the tomb and He bore children. What next? Well, for starters, every Christian bible ever written becomes a hoax. The very foundation of Christianity then becomes falsified. Every believer in the Christian faith has believed in a lie. The very fabric of religion, of faith itself, is shredded and desecrated by the One Christianity and faith has been forged upon – the Carpenter Jerusalem – Jesus. What more? If Christianity had been duped, every religion throughout the world must question the validity of its foundation.
For a man like Dr. James Tabor, who spent his entire life invested in searching for the truth behind religion, faith, and Christianity, I do not believe his intentions are to tear apart that which his faith is built upon. I believe Dr. Tabor may have stumbled upon a truth in an attempt to prove or disprove a theory – the validity of Christ – the validity of Christianity.
In the coming days I will be paying close attention to the developments of Dr. Tabor’s findings. I look forward to his results. With luck, we will know more about this remarkable discovery before the impending Mayan doomsday – 287 days, 9 hours, 3 minutes, and 41 seconds from the time this blog posted.
